The HOT SEAT
i
nterview with a car tester
David Clare,
Land Rover.
Name: David Clare. Age: 40

Family: Wife Alison & 3-year-old son

Home: Banbury, Oxfordshire, England

Company: Land Rover

Occupation: I am an engineer. I work with vehicle dynamics, ride and handling.

Favourite food: Lamb chops, roast vegetables and Yorkshire pudding (which is like a thick pancake baked in the oven). When I am here in Arjeplog, I like to eat reindeer meat.

Dream car: My dream vehicle is a green Scammell Explorer, 6-wheel-drive truck, a British army truck from 1940’s.

Present car:
I have a blue Ford Galaxy, an old, red Peugeot 306 and one and a half vintage Land Rovers (green) that I am restoring and have been restoring for the last 18 years.

Spare time activities:
I am interested in old vehicles, trucks and tractors. I have studied agricultural engineering. A lot of my spare time goes to maintaining a Historic Sawmill which has a steam engine and water wheel.
I also like walking and in Arjeplog snow-mobiling and cross country skiing.
What is good in Arjeplog?
The people are friendly and the countryside is nice.
I am glad to be out of the office and enjoy driving the cars on the ice.

What is bad in Arjeplog?
We have to work longer and longer.
The meals at the hotels are good but there are not enough vegetables.
I also dislike the journey, I dislike travelling by aeroplane, it is so cramped.

Music you enjoy?
Music from the 60’s, Jethro Tull, Fairport Convention. I also like music from the 80’s.

What is important in life?
To have good health and to be happy. To enjoy your job and to enjoy your family.
A painted Scammell Explorer, that is no longer green, at a historical vehicle rally. It was being used to pull out vehicles which were getting stuck in the mud.

Arjeplog is a special place for David Clare and his wife. In 2002, during the Easter weekend, on top of Galtispouda Mountain, David proposed to his girlfriend, who then became his wife.
In May/June 2003 they came here for a holiday and they really like the place.
